I found three canning jars full of old buttons at a yard sale, and one of them included this curious disc marked Viola. It isn't a button. I think it might be from an antique pump organ, but I'm not sure. I bought the whole lot just for this one piece, because I loved the mystery of it.

Hello, all - I have taken it out, and found it is made of glazed ceramic.
As for what to do with all the buttons, I just use the jars themselves them as decorative objects. I do have a lot of buttons though, both old and new, and have debated for years about what to do with them all.
That's great! Yes, I think you're right, it must be from an organ or a similar instrument. It would be lovely incorporated into a piece of jewellery, wouldn't it?

Great find! I love old buttons. I still have a can full of them from my grandmother's house. I remember playing with them when I was little and still can't bring myself to get rid of them. :)

Two things:
1. I love buttons. I have a button box and love to look through them and add to my collections
2. What in the heck would a "viola" button do? Being ignorant of musical instruments especially organs.

Life - I think it would change the tone of the organ's sound to make it more like a viola. Organs do have preset sounds of various kinds.
It's fascinating to see how many other people love buttons! I'll have to do some more work with them.

I misread that as, "voila." When I realized my error, I was quite disappointed. I thought the unexpected presentation of the word, "voila," was a beautiful example of serendipity. But, no.
