The Round Robin Photo Challenges: Fabulous Freaks Of Nature

Hello all,

This is my first attempt at the Round Robin Photo Challenge, and it is so nice meeting all these talented people who participate. Here's hoping I don't embarrass myself too badly.

The subject this time, proposed by Meg at In Quest Of, is "Fabulous Freaks of Nature".

This is a cutting that arrived in a florist bouquet over a year ago. The reason I kept it is that it has these flowers, or fruiting bodies, or whatever they are on the undersides of the bottom two leaves. It's been in a little bottle of water all that time. It never grows roots, it hasn't rotted, and no other leaves on it ever do this. It is, however, beginning to turn a bit yellow, and may be at the end of its strange little life.

I have been unable to find out what it is, and I've been unable to bring myself to toss it until I do. If anyone out there can identify it, please do?

Thanks, Carly, for inviting me to play!

Hi Vicki :)

YAY! Welcome to the Round Robin Photo Challenges! That is a lovely photo and so very unusual. I have no idea what it could be, but I think it's really cool and interesting to be sure. :) I am so pleased you could join us, I will be looking forward to your future entries. :)

Always, Carly :)

Thanks for the encouragement, Carly.

This little devil just didn't want its picture taken. I think it confused my poor little camera; it didn't seem to know what part of the plant to focus on. Ah well, practice, practice.

I have no clue what it is, either, but it's really interesting, and very well photographed. Welcome to the Robins!

Nice! Certainly strange, I have no idea what's going on there. My guess is it's some kind of insect egg cluster or nest. Might be a feature of the plant too but I don't recognize the leaves. Very interesting.

Welcome to the Robins!

Hello Karen and Steve! Nice to meet you.

The structures in the photo are growing out of the midveins of the leaves, on short stems, and they seem to have tiny flowers sometimes, so they're definitely not eggs. But that's a good guess, given the way they look in the photo.

Thanks to you both for stopping by.

That is truly a mystery, and perfect for the theme! I don't have any idea what it could be but then I tend to be a little bit horticulturally-challenged. :-) I hope you find your answer. Welcome to the Robins!
