Shadow Shots: Here There Be Dragons

Shadow Dragon

There be a LOT of dragons, actually - dragonflies bigger than the hummingbirds. Dozens of them. This one obligingly posed on the deck railing for a shadow portrait. Gotta love those gorgeous wings.

Macro Monday: Viola.

Viola

I found three canning jars full of old buttons at a yard sale, and one of them included this curious disc marked Viola. It isn't a button. I think it might be from an antique pump organ, but I'm not sure. I bought the whole lot just for this one piece, because I loved the mystery of it.

Macro Monday: Queen Anne's Ice

Queen Anne's Ice

Hello there! This is my first entry in this meme. I don't know what took me so long - I love shooting macro, and I've been admiring all of your entries for some time now. Thought I'd jump in this time.

Return of the Round Robins: Roots

Roots 2

Hey! We're back! I didn't realize it until I popped by Carly's place and found a party in progress. So, to kick off 2010 the Round Robins are exploring our roots. So to speak.

All the roots around here are currently under a foot of snow, so I dug some out of my archives.

Roots 4

This tree grows at Natural Stone Bridge and Caves in the Adirondacks, on a gigantic granite slab that stands nearly on its end. Massive roots go completely down the stone to the ground, while slender ones snake up to the summit to find a grip.

Unfortunately, they have nailed and posted signs everywhere, and the place is a maze of stairs and handrails, so getting an unimpeded shot of the whole affair is impossible. Still, I hope you can get at least a sense of it.

PhotoHunt: Technology

WineTanks

Vast, voluptuous vats of vino shimmer under fluorescent light at Tabor Hill Winery in Michigan.

You were expecting, maybe, dusty oak barrels? Buxom, barefoot peasant women standing up to their knees in tubs of grapes? You are so cute.

Nearly all wine is made in factories these days, but it's still mighty tasty.

Explore technology this week at: Photo Hunt.

P.S. I asked about those tennis-ball-sized dimples in the vats. I was told they have to do with controlling the temperature of the silos.

Monochrome Weekly: Game Over

Nothing But Net

I love this old abandoned barn, waiting patiently for someone to come and play. Standing under the tattered net, you can almost hear faint echoes of laughter.

Shadow Shots: Pumpkin Flowers

Pumpkin leaves are huge and make for deep shade below. The flowers seem to glow at the edges and to hold shadows deep inside.

Monochrome Weekly: Beans a la Georgia

Beanflower 1

Found these lascivious ladies in the bean patch. I'll bet the next time you have green beans, you're going to remember this post.

Monochrome Weekly: Diamond Necklace

Diamond Necklace

I nearly stepped on this web before noticing it. I had no tripod with me, and by the time I returned with one about an hour later, I couldn't find it again. The shot could be sharper and the background could be fuzzier, but I still like it.

Monochrome Weekly: Wraith

Wraith

Maybe I should have saved this one for Halloween. The "wraith" is a moth on my patio door at night, but I don't know what the white orb is. The flash did not fire.

It actually photographed more as a golden sepia, but I like this spooky grey, grainy effect that happened when I completely desaturated the shot and boosted the contrast. ( I hope that's not cheating. I'm new here.)

Shadow Shots: Follow the Rainbow

Follow the Rainbow

The prism effect is from sunlight shining through my hummingbird feeder onto the kitchen countertop. As luck would have it, a stray herd of cherries got curious about all the colors and crept out of the shadows to investigate.

Shadow Shots: Liquid Hope

Two of these, a tall lemonade, and a day of "bed" rest in the hammock is a sure cure for a summertime cold.

I set these Dayquil capsules on the counter while I poured a glass of water and was struck by the pretty way they cast glowing shadows and reflect the windows behind them.

It's funny what you notice when your brain is all gummed up.

Shadow Shots: Heart of Darkness

Pod 2

Deep in the heart of the glowing pod, a shadow grows.

P.S. I don't know what the pod is. It's a weed growing in my lettuce patch. It was too interesting to pull up.

Locked

It's been a long time since I've joined in this meme, but I love this ancient latch on a country chicken coop, and I thought somebody else might enjoy seeing it too.

Round Robins: Growing

Our Pond in Spring

Flags

This one was suggested by Jan, AKA Whammy, of The Ellis Family Cincinnati.

Pretty much everything is growing this time of year, from kids to birds to gardens, and the Robins are right there with their trusty cameras to catch all the wonder and glory of the season. Our little pond is absolutely bursting with life.

I've been snapping wild flower pictures as I find new things popping up. (I'm adding them to this Flickr set as I go.) Right now, the stars of the show are these wild iris, which love the edges of wetlands and ponds. If you enlarge the first photo, you'll see them in the foreground and more way back at the far edge of the water.

My Mom loved irises, and I think of her every time I see them. She would have loved these.

Be sure to visit the other entries at the Round Robins Photo Challenge, and join us next time.
