Round Robins: Birds

Fight or flight: In the foreground, hummingbirds squabble over landing rights at the feeder. Those spots in air in the background are a huge flock of some kind of dark bird that is apparently migrating south.

Birds are among my favorite creatures, but photographing them is not one of my strengths.

We certainly have enjoyed this second feeder. It sticks to the kitchen window with a suction cup, so the birds are inches away from us when we wash dishes. As many as six at a time will zoom around it, each trying to chase away the others between sips. They empty the whole thing every day.

Curious little things, aren't they?

* Click photos for great big closeups.

For more birds, be sure to stop by this time at the Round Robins Photo Challenge.

Hi Vicki :)

Hummingbirds! Beautiful! I just love them, they can be a real challenge to photograph, but when you get a good shot, like the ones you have here, it can be such an invigorating experience. Very nicely done!

Two of my most precious memories, memories of perfect moments, involve hummingbirds. One was watching a hummingbird play in the sprinkler in our back yard one early summer morning. In the other, I was standing in the backyard, talking to my mother on the phone, and a hummingbird zipped up and perched on our rose trellis, about three feet from me. I stopped breathing, listening, thinking, for the moment he was there.

Thank you for bringing those moments back with these shots.

The hummingbirds are wonderful! I have tried to attract them around here before with little to no success. Maybe I should try again next year! Great job!

Nice catch. We had 3 very flirty hummingbirds this spring that hung around our yard but I never did catch them on camera. They would buzz by while I was working in the yard but if I was out with a camera, they were no where to be seen!
