Shadow Shots: In Honor of John Pep Panelli

In Honor of John Panelli

It struck as sweet and poignant, this gentle butterfly poised on a memorial stone, its fragile wings shading the name of a loved one.

Curious, I Googled the honoree, John Pep Panelli, and was surprised when I actually found him: John Panelli, Man of Action. He was a fullback at Notre Dame from 1945-1948, and according to the article he was "a fast and very cagey runner, a smashing blocker and a 'savage' tackler on defense. When Panelli hit them 'they stayed hit'."

You gotta love the irony.

The butterfly speaks of life and living. To fall upon this brick of a famous tough football player, it seems to indicate the softer side. No doubt this player had a soft side too, at least off the playing field. A study in opposites here!

COMPADRES

Shadows above me,
Shadows below;
Some shadows swift and
Some shadows slow;
All of these shadows,
It’s plain to see,
Are my compadres—
Sweet company!

Nice photo. The butterfly brillant with color casting its soft shadow upon the brick. And it inspired you to search out the story of the person the brick is dedicated to, and then to share it with us!
Great Post!
