Style and Grace

Hudson Terraplane

Hudson 8 Terraplane Ornament

I am not a car person. Nevertheless, I have fallen in love with vintage Hudsons. I like them even better than the Studebakers that were once made here. The craftsmanship in these gorgeous old behemoths  is jaw-dropping.

These were taken last week at Hostetler's Hudson Auto Museum in Shipshewana, Indiana. It's a Hudson Terraplane 8 from the thirties; sadly, I did not make note of the exact model and year.

There was so much to see there, but all of it was nearly impossible to photograph. The light was dim; the backgrounds were cluttered with other cars, posters, and displays; every car had a huge informational placard parked in front of the grille; people were always getting in the shot. Plus, since I didn't know we were going to stop there I had only my G9 with me, which doesn't do well in low light and had a low battery.

Still, I have been able to salvage some shots with picmonkey. These are the best of the lot.

P.S. April 28, Sunday: I've just found the "Showroom" tab on the museum website. For nice shots of some of the stars of their show, click here: Showroom. These cars seem to have struck a chord, and I thought y'all might enjoy seeing these. (Scroll over the thumbnails to enlarge each one.) Thanks for all your comments!

The Terraplane was a rare and unique Hudsons - and they were considered to be fast cars in their day. The fine chrome waterfall grille is art-deco beautiful! The peach color Hudson is beautiful - any imperfections you may see matter not as the stylish auto is so full of lovely details that they overshadow any lighting issues. In fact, your edits make this vehicle look even better!

Well, your "salvaged" photos are great! I didn't know this place existed. I actually looked at a couple Terraplanes with the intention of buying in my younger days, but common sense prevailed. Either one would have required a lot of work. My dad owned an Essex back in the 30s. When it outlived its useful life, he repurposed the front axle for a homemade utility trailer. I still remember the wooden spokes on the wheels. If I don't make it over to Shipshewana, I will have the Terraplane Blues.

Love those old cars. They really knew how to make them works of art, didn't they?

David - I was unable to locate an entry for you, or a recently updated blog, or an email address. So... I hope you see this and know that I do appreciate your comment, and if you do get to Shipshewana let me know. I'm only 45 minutes away.

I love the old cars because the design of each make was distinctive. I didn't realize that there was such a museum in Shipshewana! I've been there only for their flea market-type shows with friends.
