Fridays Fences: Boys of Summer

2013_06_14_9999_274a

What could be more appropriate for the first day of summer than scenes from a hometown baseball game? This was the South Bend Silver Hawks vs. The Dayton Dragons.

Now, I have to confess that my husband had to drag me there. My distant memories of baseball involved deep sunburns and even deeper boredom. But our seats were in the shade, and there were lots of distractions and attractions for those of us with short attention spans. Plus, I had my camera to play with.

The "fence" here is actually more of a net. It's there to keep people from getting beaned by foul balls.

With a deep, booming Voice of God, the vendor calls "Cold beer, peanuts, aaaaaand?"
The crowd response is always, "Craack-er Jacks!"

Our home boys got their hats handed to them, but it was still a great time.

Baseball is a slow paced game that often relies on the guile of the manager. Yet it can be a rich game - moves are made that are like chess, tactical and strategic (pulling the outfield in, intentional walks, etc). I find the slow pacing (and a cold can of Miller Lite :) an oddly relaxing way to spend 3 hours!

Three great photos, I like that baseball players shot the best.

Have a nice weekend.

Wonderful lighting in the first photo and love the tale of the vendor's call!

I've been to a Dayton Dragons game...in Dayton where I used to live. You captured the feeling of the game wonderfully.

Ralph, I have heard it's a subtle game. Since I understand none of those subtleties, I only perk up when the pitcher winds up. My loss, probably, but like Robin I'm more interested in people watching. And the beer.
