Shadow Shots: Whirly

When I was a kid, we called maple seeds "whirlybirds" or "helicopters" for the way they spiraled through the air as they fell. These landed on my doormat, which has a sort of whirly pattern of its own. Perhaps a case like calling to like?

A fascinating pair of photos. Love how these "whirlybirds" have their last call of beauty embedded in the mat pattern.

What are the odds? Really, that is so interesting! We had maple trees with helicopter seeds for many years. The children really enjoyed them.

Indeed, these look like helicopter rotors as they descend (or is that land?) on your front stoop. Always a treat to see so many of these descending onto our homes and porches. Until we have to clean the thousands of them up that is :)

Maple seeds (and it took me my whole life to find this out) are called samaras! (So now you can say to your friends, "Let's go look for a samara or two.")
