Sky Watch: The Edge of the Storm

2013_05_31_9479a

Blue sky behind a recent thunderstorm. I think I was a few minutes too late for the best clouds, but they still looked unusual, don't you think?

Fence

I try to use the photo memes I do as inspiration to teach myself something. Currently, I've decided to work on compositional focus in black and white. In this set, the first crop is about the barn, the second crop is about the sky, and the third is about the fence. Which do you like best?

Out of the Blue

An enigmatic sculpture on the Michigan shore. (Don't you wish they'd placed that trashcan somewhere else?)

Over the Rainbow ... Another Rainbow

The day was grey, and we had just tucked in to our evening supper. It was still raining when the sun came out, and The Hubby announced, "There's gotta be a rainbow."

We hustled out to see and were rewarded with not just a rainbow, but a double rainbow, a full half circle over the eastern woods.

With no wide-angle lens, and having to shoot from the shelter of the garage, I could only get part of it in the shot. I  wish you could have seen the whole thing. It really was spectacular - well worth letting dinner get cold.

Skywatch: Of Brides and Biplanes

2012_05_05_5484ab

The wedding was awesome! The weather held, so the ceremony was outside, the hangar doors were open to showcase the biggest full moon ever, and my son's biplane buddies proceeded to buzz the bride.

(In case you're new here, my son is a pilot and flight center manager whose wedding took place last Saturday inside a hangar, planes included. And it was Cinco de Mayo. Sombreros were involved.)

I didn't focus on photography, because it's too easy to miss the experience when I do that. There a lot of shots I wish now that I had thought to take, but I still got quite a few. Here's the slideshow so far:

Skywatch 35: Freedom

Freedom

A pair of Canada geese, residents of our backyard pond, take a sunset flight around the neighborhood before settling in for the night.

SkyWatch Friday: Promised Land

Promised Land

I love this part of flying, being above the clouds. Up here at the edge of the sky is a magical land of white mountains and blue horizons, peaceful and clear. The tribulations of earth-bound life fade from memory. Here there be angels.

SkyWatch: Balloons Over Albuquerque

2011_10_01_3789a

2011_10_01_3724a

I have always loved balloons - in my younger days I toyed with the idea of getting a balloon pilot license myself. So it was a dream come true last week when we went to the 40th Annual Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

It was absolutely wondrous to stand there at dawn among the towering, billowing masses of color, fire, and sound. Wave after wave lifted and rose, baskets brushing by only a few feet away, until the sky was filled with their magic and joy.

These shots are from the mass ascension October 1, where the festival set a new world record: 345 balloons launched in one hour.

And yes, I will be uploading photographs for weeks.

SkyWatch: Pteradactyls Over Michigan

Sunset With Pteradactyl

This rusty-metal sculpture is part of a larger collection done by a local high school shop class in the Saint Joseph, Michigan area. There's a hand wheel at the base that you can use to rotate it.

Wish we'd had projects this cool when we were in school.

Skywatch Friday: Infinity and Beyond

Infinity and Beyond

Lighthouse at Silver Beach, Michigan. I loved the way the pier seemed to lead right into the sky.

SkyWatch Friday: Perry Park Sunset

Sunset on Lake Erie

End of the day after a family get-together on the shores of Lake Erie.

Fifteen minutes later, a black storm front swept in from the lake and just about drowned us. But at this point you couldn't even see it coming.

AND it's my first entry in SkyWatch Friday: Here's the link.
