May 9 is Lost Sock Memorial Day

IMG_1011

In honor of the occasion, I have written you a poem:

Ode to a Lost Sock

Does anyone know
where the single socks go
when a pair of them go in the dryer?
Do they slip out to play
and wander away,
forgetting that they are attire?

Do they tire of their mate
and their tiresome fate,
every day in the dark of a shoe?
Do they follow the song
of a silky black thong
and cling to that siren like glue?

Are they captured by pirates,
or stolen by gnomes
who are jealous of our cozy toes?
Are they pilfered by mice
to make their nest nice?
Are there gangs of barefoot Eskimos?

There are those who say,
in a sinister way,
that a dryer's a portal in space;
that socks who fall through
(and they swear this is true)
warm the feet of an alien race.

Ah, does anyone
anyone anyone know,
someone who isn't a liar?
Does anyone know
where the single socks go
when a pair of them go in the dryer?

I have a pile of socks missing their mates, and they've been hangin' around for a year! Maybe it's time to set them free.

Have a great weekend!

Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! Sometimes the socks vanish from the bathroom, even before the washing and drying. These days I try to stick to similar socks for each person - kind of colour-coded, so instead of 3 odd socks I can pretend 2 make a pair!

Hi guys, glad you liked this one.

Dragonstar, we do that too. We buy a great big bag of all-the-same socks for each person in the family; each person has his own style of sock, and no matter how many get lost the survivors always match. We do the same thing with those knit winter gloves.

I'm just catching up with the news. I'm going to print your poem and pin it up on the bulletin board in the wash room when I get home! LOL

That is a great poem.

My 3 year old son tells me that when we are out of the house during the day his stuffed animal cat, Amber, is the culprit. He tells me that Amber hides the socks and that is why we can't find the matches.

I see my "Lost sock" post is already linked back here. I came back to tell you that some of my readers may be dropping by to visit you from:

I especially like the idea
"that a dryer's a portal in space;
that socks who fall through
(and they swear this is true)
warm the feet of an alien race."

Hello, Prats, nice to meet you! Thanks for the kind workds. And yes, I'm afraid your single socks will need to find a new way to express themselves. Puppets, perhaps?

Wow, Bonnie, I am so flattered! Thanks a million for linking back her, and for letting me know about it. I wondered where the sudden activity on this post was coming from. LOL

Welcome, everyone from Weekend Wordsmith! It's always a pleasure to see new faces. So to speak.
